SEEKING INFORMATION ABOUT THE ISLLC STANDARDS?

Officially known as the "Educational Leadership Policy Standards: ISLLC 2008," the Interstate School Leadership Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) Standards are the product of work sponsored by Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO).

The CCSSO website offers the following explanation of the ISLLC 2008 publication:

"This document represents the latest set of high-level policy standards for education leadership. It provides guidance to state policymakers as they work to improve education leadership preparation, licensure, evaluation, and professional development. As adopted by the National Policy Board for Educational Administration (NPBEA), these standards reflect the wealth of new information and lessons learned about education leadership over the past decade."

The CCSSO website reports that a study group, led by co-chairs Joseph Murphy of Vanderbilt University and Rosemary Papa of Northern Arizona University, identified a representative sample of the research supporting the ISLLC 2008 Policy Standards. This group "identified a representative sample of 83 empirical and 47 sources of knowledge references which support the six standards."

Since their original release in 1996, the ISLLC Standards have been adopted, and/or adapted, by many state departments of education when constructing their state-specific standards for licensing school leaders. Similarly, many universities and colleges use the ISLLC Standards as guidelines for defining the work of the school principal.

SEEKING THE ISLLC SELF-INVENTORY?

> The original (1996) ISLLC Standards serve as the basis for a school leader "self inventory." Until a similar document is created for the 2008 ISLLC Standards, we will continue to offer the following (original) ISLLC Self-Inventory (.pdf)

ARE TODAY'S SCHOOL LEADERS POORLY PREPARED?
